Sylvia G: A Senior Success StorySylvia G. is a 68-year-old recently widowed retired school teacher still living in the home she and her husband shared for 35 years. She has two children, both married and living out of state. Last year, after her husband died unexpectedly, Sylvia found herself alone for the first time in her adult life. She had a few friends, but they, too, were getting older, and dealing with their own personal challenges. Sylvia found herself spending more and more time at home alone, in bed, either reading or watching television. There were days that she never bothered to change out of her pajamas. One afternoon, while glancing through her mail, Sylvia came across a postcard from the MJCCA urging her to “take advantage of our Membership Special” and “join today,” because “you belong here.” Sylvia wondered if she really did belong there. After all, she and her husband had never been all that active in the Jewish community. Suddenly, Sylvia made a decision, the first since her husband had died. Today, Sylvia is an active member of the MJCCA. She is busy with new friends and new-found interests. She volunteers three days at week at the preschool, enjoys water aerobics through the Silver Sneakers program, and has learned to play a mean game of mah jongg. She is enrolled in her third SeniorNet computer class where she has learned how to use email, and can now correspond with her children and grandchildren on a daily basis. She especially enjoys the Melton classes she takes through the Lisa Brill Institute for Jewish Learning. Here, she is rediscovering her Jewish identity, and engaging in thought-provoking discussions about Judaic heritage and traditions. Tonight, Sylvia is going to Jewish Theatre of the South's opening night performance of Brooklyn Boy… with George, a nice Jewish widower she met at during the Senior Olympics. Sylvia has definitely found a place where she belongs.
