Mordecai Kaplan suggested that there are three ways of identifying with a religious community: by behaving, by believing, or by belonging. He argued that 'belonging' meant that intuitive sense of kinship that bonds Jews together through history. We live in an open culture where identifying with a Jewish community is entirely voluntary. In this course we will explore existential/philosophical questions about belonging by asking some very basic questions: How did I get here? What I am doing here? Where am I going? These questions and many others like them have been pondered throughout Jewish history. We will read, think and discuss a variety of texts to help us understand these questions and perhaps arrive at some meaningful outcomes for ourselves.
