This course will examine how Jewish artists/artisans and their patrons created artistic and architectural works in a wide variety of genres and contexts. Whether synagogue murals from antiquity, illuminated manuscripts from the middle ages, or portraits and monumental synagogue structures from the modern era - Jewish artistic expression has served as an apt reflection of social, religious and cultural yearnings. We will further examine the erroneous, but long-held belief that Jews did not create artistic and iconographic imagery.
