Jews Believe(d) That? Magic and Divination in Jewish Life

Wednesdays, 08-22-2018 (15 sessions)
10:45 AM to 11:45 AM
MJCCA-Zaban Park • 5342 Tilly Mill Road
Dunwoody, Georgia 30338

From demons and dybbuks to love spells and astrology, magic and divination have played a role in Jewish life and history. This class explores that history in all of its permutations. Topics to be addressed range from the Biblically sanctioned use of the Urim and Thummim to rabbinic conflicts over astrology. It also will examine the uses of charms, amulets, and magical formulae both to generate good fortune and to protect individuals from demons. (In doing so, we also will spend some time examining the immense variety of demons in Jewish lore.) Additionally, we will address the pervasiveness of such practices and ideas in light of the apparent Biblical and rabbinic opposition to many of them and rabbinical disagreements over what was (and what was not) acceptable.
