"From Moses to Moses there was none like Moses" so reads the inscription on the tomb of Maimonides, Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, Rambam. Who was this man deserving of comparison to Moses himself? Why does he loom so large in Jewish thought and practice? This course undertakes to give the answer to those questions. You will learn about his eventful life, from his family's flight from war and persecution to his service as physician of the Sultan of Egypt and his recognition as the "Great Rav in Israel." We also will examine the cultural and intellectual ethos of his time and delve into his thinking, examining the relationship between his role as a halakhist and philosopher/theologian.
