This course examines Jewish identity and religious expression against the backdrop of dramatic political and social change. We will be reading and discussing primary texts to gain insights into the historical and ideological developments of the major movements,

This class will include Chapters 1-5:

Class 1: The Emergence of a Denominational Perspective in Response to Modernity 

Class 2: Religion Encounters Modern Europe I: The Rise of Reform Judaism in the 19th Century 

Class 3:Religion Encounters Modern Europe II: Traditionalist Reactions to Reform and Modern Culture

Class 4: The Evolution of Reform Judaism in America 

Class 5: The Early Conservative Movement and the Reconstructionist Alternative
