Sam Sifton, See You on Sunday

Sam Sifton, The New York Times food editor, columnist, and former restaurant critic, believes that regular dinners with family and friends can make your life better, and the lives of those who eat with you as well. These dinners aren’t parties. They’re a metaphor for connection, a space where memories can be shared as easily as salt or hot sauce, where deliciousness reigns. Even if you don’t particularly like entertaining, there is great pleasure to be found in cooking for others—and great pleasure to be found in gathering with others, more often than sometimes, on a regular schedule. The point is simply to gather around a table with good company and to enjoy good food, and to do so regularly enough that people know they’ll be happening, because they happen every week. In addition to Sifton’s prose and argument, See You on Sunday is filled with low-stress, high-impact recipes designed to make eating with family and friends easier and more joyful.

Sam Sifton is the food editor of The New York Times, a columnist for The New York Times Magazine, and the founding editor of the NYT Cooking, an award-winning digital cookbook and cooking school. Formerly the newspaper’s national news editor, its chief restaurant critic and culture editor, he is also the author of Thanksgiving: How to Cook It Well. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.

Melissa Clark, Dinner in French

Melissa Clark, columnist for A Good Appetite, the wildly popular column in The New York Times, first fell in love with France and French food as a child; near to her heart, France is where Melissa’s family learned to cook and eat. Just as Julia Child brought French cooking to 20th century America, with Dinner in French, Clark brings French cooking into the 21st century. At once authoritative and approachable, Dinner in French is masterful for its 150 wide-ranging new recipes and authentic and brilliantly updated dishes that reflect how we shop, cook, and eat today. In Dinner in French Melissa marries the French food she loves with the weeknight friendly techniques and ingredients she relies on in her Brooklyn kitchen. Dinner in French is a thrilling go-to resource for dinner every night or for any occasion.

Melissa Clark, author of Dinner, Dinner in an Instant, and Comfort in an Instant, is the winner of multiple James Beard and IACP awards. She is the host of the "Weeknight Kitchen" podcast on NPR's The Splendid Table. Clark earned an MFA in writing from Columbia, and her work has been selected for the Best American Food Writing. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.
