Hartman’s iEngage: Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

view options This course confronts one of the most difficult issues dividing the Jewish people today: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Some wonder how they can understand, relate to, and identify with an Israel whose policies are so different from their own. Others wonder how they can talk with and tolerate Jews who advocate positions which they profoundly disrespect and believe are dangerous to the future of Israel.
Nowadays, for too many Jews, Israel no longer plays a unifying role, nor does it serve as a cohesive force for Jewish peoplehood. In many cases, Israel itself has become a source of divisiveness, acrimony, and mutual alienation, greater than our denominational divides.
The goal of the iEngage Project is to reverse this trend by providing tools to enable new foundations for a relationship with Israel and for overcoming the deep intolerance around Israel that has infected many of our communities. We cannot avoid areas of conflict and disagreement, nor can we argue that these must be put aside "for now," given extenuating circumstances or the current crisis Israel has faced extenuating circumstances and a "current crisis" since its founding. We must learn to talk with each other and to put the issues that most divide us at the fore of our consciousness.
Join us for this fascinating look into ourselves, our communities, and our connection to Israel.
This course contains video interviews that frame the weekly discussion. Participants will watch the videos both at home and in class.
