Jewish Life in Europe 1900-1939: From Hope to Catastrophe
view options As the 19th century ended European Jewry, at least in the west, anticipated increasing freedom and acceptance. In the east things looked bleaker as antisemitism became part of government policy and the weakening Russian Empire faced economic and social pressures and the threat of revolution. Still, Jews would become increasingly prominent in the arts, sciences, and professions and the promise of liberalism seemed in reach. But within four decades war, revolution, depression, and the rise of Nazism would prove that promise false. In this course we will examine the social and cultural history of European Jewry in its glories and tragedies and will highlight Jewish life on the eve of destruction.Instructor Dr. Edward Queen
