Music & Morsels: Beethoven’s Cello Sonata

view options Come join pianist Ian Scarfe and special guest cellist James Jaffe, who will perform and discuss Beethoven's Cello Sonata.

The first composer to bring the cello into a solo voice, Beethoven was one of the most dramatic and influential composers of chamber music.

The duo will perform Beethoven's 3rd Cello Sonata in A Major, from the composer’s "heroic" period, discuss details in the music, share stories of their own performances, and tell more history of the music and of Beethoven himself.

Ian Scarfe enjoys a wide-ranging career as an advocate for music. Initially following directions to become a piano soloist, he quickly discovered the joys of diversifying his work. As a performer, he is equally comfortable as a soloist, accompanying recital partners, or in the mix of a small or large ensemble. As a speaker, he is a frequent lecturer during formal concerts, a host and emcee during casual musical events, and also a narrator for children's programs. As a musical entrepreneur, he keeps a busy travel schedule across the United States and Europe organizing concerts, tours, and festivals.

Cellist James Jaffe connects with audiences, colleagues, and composers through music. He has performed solos with CityMusic Cleveland, the National Repertory Orchestra, and the Stockton Symphony. Chamber music appearances have taken him to the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute in Manhattan, Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music, and Switzerland and France on concert tours. In addition to being a prolific performer, James serves as Artistic Director of Festival Rolland, a summer chamber music festival in Burgundy, France.
