Project Zug, Partnership Learning: A Beginners Course with an Instructor

view options Zug is Hebrew for partner and Project Zug is a Learning Partnership program developed by the Hadar Institute that trains adults in the art and practice of textual learning with a partner. In this unique course we will be learning in-class, together as a large group, as well as in smaller partnership groups using the Hadar curriculum. We will discuss Jewish texts and look closely at the issues surrounding the topics.
Everyday Moral Dilemmas: Wrestle with every day moral dilemmas, the sorts of which we each encounter all of the time in our lives, through the lens of traditional Jewish texts.
In this course, we’ll consider questions like: "If and when is it okay to shame someone else for the sake of protecting another," and "Are there instances in which it is not only permissible to lie but in fact necessary?"
We'll pose these every day moral dilemmas to classic Jewish sources and see what, if any wisdom, they have to offer us when confronted with these questions. In doing so, we'll attempt to not only answer the dilemmas before us but suggest a model for what it might look like to turn to Jewish texts for guidance on pressing questions of our times.
Out of the Ruins: Jewish Views on Resilience:
Throughout the ages, the Jewish people have experienced significant downfalls and periods of great adversity from the flood that nearly destroyed the world to the destruction of the Temple to the Holocaust, an unprecedented time of darkness and despair. And, yet each time, the Jewish people drew on wellsprings of resilience to not only continue on but to continue forward, rebuilding for the next generation.
In this four-session course, we’ll look to our own tradition, focusing on narratives from the Torah as well as the events of Jewish history to mine our texts for wisdom on resilience. We’ll ask: what are the different shapes resilience takes and how might we cultivate our own capacity for resilience based on the wisdom of Jewish tradition?
