Synagogues Around the World
view options Since the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, Jews have found themselves spread throughout the globe. This diaspora led to new cultural and architectural forms as Jews interacted with their local communities to capture the richness and diversity of their houses of worship across time and geography.A reprise of a course offered before COVID, this course will travel the world – virtually, of course, to visit jaw-droppingly beautiful synagogues from the US to Europe and beyond — and from Sephardi to Ashkenazi to Mizrahi congregations. There are Stars of David, stained glass windows, elaborate candelabras, and stunning bimahs. There’s Moorish revival to art nouveau styles. Each is worth a visit.
