The State of the Union, State of the State, and Other Important Stuff… According to Mike Luckovich

(ATLANTA) Mike Luckovich, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), brings his wit and wisdom to the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 7:30 pm. Luckovich will speak on a variety of topics including “The State of the Union, State of the State, and Other Important Stuff” during his third, much-anticipated MJCCA appearance.

Luckovich, whose work appears regularly in Time Magazine and The New York Times as well as the AJC, proves daily that a picture is worth a 1000 words. He brilliantly translates today's headlines into witty, thought-provoking cartoons that have garnered him numerous awards and critical acclaim. He received his first Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1995 and his second in late 2006. He also received the 1994 Robert F. Kennedy and Overseas Press Club Awards, the 1992 National Headliner Award, and three first places in the Cox Newspaper's awards, all for cartooning.

BACKGROUNDER:

Luckovich is a native of Seattle, Washington where he graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's in political science. After graduation, he worked as a traveling salesman while dreaming of a career in newspaper cartooning. His big break came in 1984 when he began working for the New Orleans Times-Picayune as an editorial cartoonist. He joined the AJC in 1989 where he quickly rose to local and national fame for his dead-on, humor-driven political cartoons.
