Company J at the MJCCA Continues its 2012-2013 Season With the Lively Musical, "Seussical"
Company J at the MJCCA continues its season of theater classics with the musical, Seussical, running April 28 and May 5, 2013. Geared specifically to younger audiences, this one-act version of Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! You'll see all your favorite Dr. Seuss friends including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination named Jojo. Seussical productions take place at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta's (MJCCA) Morris and Rae Frank Theatre, 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody. About Seussical, the Musical
The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to a butter battling military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's attention to the speck of dust and his "loitering" care of Mayzie LaBird's egg has elicited taunting and accusations from the rest of the animal kingdom, except for Gertrude McFuzz, who longs for his attention, and JoJo, whose "thinks" save them all in the end.
The Company J production is performed by adults, and running time is 85 minutes. Popular songs include: "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!"; "Horton Hears a Who!"; and "The Circus McGurkus." Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, and the book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, Seussical was co-conceived by Eric Idle; with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics Lynn Ahrens.
Brian Kimmel, Company J's Producing Artistic Director explains, “Seussical is a family musical that appeals to so many because it brings all the Dr. Seuss characters together into one big show. I think audiences will enjoy the charm, whimsy, and playful sense of humor that are the immediate visual hallmarks of Dr. Seuss.”
Kimmel continues, “But my favorite element of the show is how ultimately the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged, and emerge triumphant. Dr. Seuss has been ‘one true friend in the universe' to millions of young readers for generations, and Seussical the musical wonderfully brings these valuable stories to audiences via a new medium.”
