And The Winner Is… Jerry's Habima Theatre— In More Ways Than Won
Under the guidance of Blonder
director Susie Davidow, and dedicated assistant director, Sammy Rosenberg, this
department never ceases to amaze the community with its long list of
accomplishments.
It gives us great pleasure
to announce that one of Blonder's most beloved and well-recognized programs,
Jerry's Habima Theatre, is the proud recipient of the year's Suzi Bass "Spirit
of Suzi" Award. As part of professional theatre's much lauded Suzi Bass Awards,
which recognizes and fosters professional theatrical excellence in the Atlanta area, the "Spirit of Suzi Bass" Award is given
annually to a person or organization that demonstrates the long-term and
consistent contribution to professionalism in Atlanta theatre that embodies the spirit of the
late and much beloved Suzi Bass.
Jerry's Habima Theatre is Georgia's
only theatrical company directed and produced by professionals featuring actors
(aged 18 and up) with developmental disabilities. Each year, the cast presents a full-scale
adaptation of a Broadway musical to sell-out audiences and much acclaim. Jerry's
Habima Theatre's 2007 production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's G2K Oklahoma, beautifully directed by the MJCCA's own assistant arts and entertainment director, Dina Shadwell,
played to sold-out audiences and earned the dedicated cast and crew this coveted
award.
Overcome with excitement, Davidow
said, “There is no theatrical company more deserving of this award than the
cast and crew of Jerry's Habima Theatre. They put their hearts and souls into
every rehearsal, every performance. But to them, it's not about red carpets and
gilded statuettes, it's about putting on a wonderful, entertaining show for
family and friends and the personal pride they walk away with after every
performance.”
Mark you calendars: Jerry's
Habima Theatre's 2008 production of Footloose
opens on March 26 at the MJCCA's Morris and Rae Frank Theater. We'll be dancing in the aisles!
