Arts & Culture at the MJCCA Announces Exciting 2014-2015 Season

Season Features Cultural Offerings for Every Age and Interest; Season Opener, Les Miserables, runs August 7-17

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) is pleased to announce its 2014-2015 Arts & Culture Season offerings for audiences of all ages, with most programs taking place at the MJCCA (located at 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody). “We are pleased at the high caliber of talent that will be appearing at the MJCCA this year,” said Arts & Culture Co-Chair Jennie Medeiros. “This season features something for everyone: musical productions, a cappella and jazz performances, beautiful visual art exhibitions, comedy shows, and much more. Our committee felt a great sense of accomplishment to have hand-selected a first-rate season for our members and constituents.” 

 

Arts & Culture Co-Chair Kimberly Dollinger explained, “From top comedians and award-winning instrumentalists performing on our stage, to various family, adult, and community productions entertaining our valued theatre-goers, we are thrilled to feature internationally renowned artists through Arts & Culture at the MJCCA.”

THEATRE

What:              Season Opener: Les Misérables

When:             August 7 – 17, 2014

Where:            The MJCCA’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre

Cost:               $15 – 28

Details:           Join us as one of the world’s greatest musicals comes to the MJCCA stage. Les Misérables is the winner of over 100 international awards, sweeping audiences through an epic tale of

broken dreams, passion and redemption, against the backdrop of a nation seething with                        revolution.

                       This program is ideal for ages 14+.

 

VISUAL ARTS

What:              GODS CHANGE, PRAYERS ARE HERE TO STAY – Paintings by Archie Rand

When:             August 20 – November 30, 2014

Where:            The MJCCA’s Katz Family Mainstreet Gallery

Cost:               Free and Open to the Community

Details:           These 24 original paintings by internationally-renowned artist Archie Rand provide a visualization of Yehuda Amichai’s beautifully iconoclastic poem on G-d, prayer, and Jewish life. This exhibition also includes the full text of Amichai’s work.

 

MUSIC

What:              George Vass and Laura Gordy

When:             Sunday, August 24, 2014, 6:00 pm

Where:            The MJCCA’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre

Cost:               $10-15

Details:           Acclaimed violinist George Vass is renowned on three continents for his unique interpretations and performance style of the classics. Accompanying pianist Dr. Laura Gordy is a celebrated interpreter of contemporary music as well as classical repertoire. They will perform works by Bloch, Beethoven, and Brahms in an intimate concert setting.

Details:           Voted one of the top 10 comedians in New York City by the Hollywood Reporter and BackStage, MODI is one of the comedy circuit’s most sought after performers. Featured on HBO, CBS, NBC, ABC, Comedy Central, Howard Stern, and E! Entertainment, MODI has received rave reviews. Ticket includes complimentary glass of wine.

This program is open to adults 21 and over.

What:              JAZZ AT THE JCC PRESENTS: The Andy Statman Trio

Details:           Born in 1950 into a long line of cantors, composers, and both classical and vaudeville musicians, Andy Statman is one of America’s most gifted and sought-after mandolinists and clarinetists. Andy is a master interpreter, composer, and performer of the music that represents his dual heritage as an observant Jew and an American. His peers, fans, and the world press celebrate him as the rare multi-instrumentalist who brings to life Bluegrass, Klezmer, Jazz, Americana, and Hasidic song in a way few other musicians ever have.

What:              Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Details:           Laugh and sing along with Alexander's misadventures in this hilarious musical, featuring book and lyrics by Judith Viorst, author of the best-selling classic book.

This program is ideal for children ages 5-10.

 

FAMILY THEATRE

What:              MJCCA Youth Ensemble Presents: Disney’s The Aristocats Kids

When:             December 15 & 16, 2014

Where:            The MJCCA’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre

Cost:               $5 – $10

Details:           This feline adventure is sure to get your audiences tapping their feet to its hip, jazzy beat, which includes the Disney favorites “The Aristocats,” “Scales and Arpeggios,” and “Ev’rybody

Wants to Be a Cat.”

                       This program is ideal for all ages.

 

COMEDY

What:              Fried Chicken and Latkes, A Rain Pryor Solo Show

                        (Presented in Partnership with Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company)

When:             January 15 – 17, 2015

Where:            Southwest Arts Center, Atlanta

Cost:               $25 – $45

Details:           Rain Pryor, the daughter of comedian Richard Pryor, stars in this hilarious, effervescent solo show, which recounts her upbringing in a biracial household in Beverly Hills. Accompanied by a live jazz trio, Pryor recounts how she learned to embrace her African-American roots, her Jewish ancestry, and her father’s unique style of parenting.

This program is ideal for ages 18+.

 

VISUAL ARTS

What:              CHALOM YASHAN (A JOURNEY BACK HOME) – Original Works by Hirut Yosef

When:             January – March 2015

Where:            The MJCCA’s Katz Family Mainstreet Gallery

Cost:               Free and Open to the Community

Details:           Drawing inspiration from her Ethiopian roots, Israeli artist Hirut Yosef’s work honor strong African women using vibrant color and traditional design.

 

MUSIC

What:              JAZZ AT THE JCC PRESENTS: The Bonaventure Quartet

When:             Sunday, January 25, 2015, 7:30 pm

Where:            The MJCCA’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre

Details:           The Bonaventure Quartet is one of the premier gypsy-jazz groups in America. Shane Harrison of the Atlanta Journal & Constitution raves, “With the sultry, silky voice of former Lost Continentals front-woman Amy Pike and the gypsy-jazz flavored guitar of Charles Williams, Bonaventure is a marvelous melting pot.”

Details:           Lightwire Theatre bring their cutting edge technology, moving sculpture, and dance to another unforgettable theatrical experience as they bring new life to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, and Aesop’s Fable The Tortoise and the Hare.

What:              Jerry’s Habima Theatre Presents: Disney’s Aladdin Jr.

Details:           Jerry’s Habima Theatre, Georgia’s only theatrical company directed and produced by professionals, and featuring actors with special needs, will celebrate its 22nd season with the charming Disney’s Aladdin Jr.

MJCCA YOUTH ENSEMBLE
