Jewish Theatre of the South Announces its 13th or “Bat Mitzvah” Season
All JTS performances take place in the MJCCA's Morris and Rae Frank
Theatre located at the
Marcus JCC of Atlanta, 5342 Tilly
Mill Road, in Dunwoody. Each production will open
on a Saturday night, and will be preceded by three preview performances -
Wednesday and Thursday at 8:00 pm, and Friday at 10:30 am (the Java U Coffee
Series).
JTS is thrilled to open its season on Sat., October 13, 2007,
with COMPARING BOOKS by Marc Goldsmith. It's "The Sopranos" meets "Risky
Business," when Brown
University student Brad
Feingold finds himself in debt with the Mafia. When Brad brings loan shark
Dominic back to his family's Upper East Side apartment to search for money,
mayhem erupts, in this hilarious new comedy by the author of Danny Boy, the hit
of New York's
2006 Fringe Festival. Directed by Melanie Martin Long, COMPARING BOOKS runs
through November 4, 2007.
(Preview performances: Oct. 10-12.)
Jewish Theatre of the South continues its mainstage season
with HARD LOVE by Motti Lerner. Opening Sat., January 26, 2008 and running
through February 17, 2008, this fiercely romantic drama will be directed by
Susan Reid. Hannah and Zvi were married twenty-five years ago. They divorced when Zvi turned his back on
Judaism and Hannah did not. Now the two children from their subsequent
marriages have become romantically involved, bringing Hannah and Zvi back into
each other's lives. Set in Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox Me'ah She'arim community, and
in a contemporary Tel Aviv apartment, HARD LOVE is a piercing examination of
love and faith between a man and a woman and between the religious and the
secular communities throughout the nation of
Israel.
Written by one of Israel's
most important contemporary playwrights, HARD LOVE ran for over a year at the
Haifa Municipal Theatre. Jewish Theatre of the South's production marks the
play's second English language production, and will star JTS Artistic Director Mira Hirsch and Atlanta favorite David de Vries.
(Preview performances: Jan. 23-25)
Jewish Theatre of the South's season concludes with THE LAST
SCHWARTZ by Deborah Zoe Laufer, opening Sat. May 3, 2008. Family dysfunction
ensues when the adult Schwartz children meet
on the one-year anniversary of their father's death. Nothing remains sacred as
traditions, marriage and family are scrutinized and long-held secrets are
unearthed in this beautifully crafted and often profound comic drama. An
intriguing examination of a contemporary American family, THE LAST SCHWARTZ is
scheduled to be Broadway-bound in the spring of 2008, but local audiences can
enjoy this wickedly funny play in its regional premiere right here at JTS.
Directed by Freddie Ashley, THE LAST SCHWARTZ runs through May 25, 2008.
(Preview performances: April 30-May 2)
In addition to the three-play subscription series, JTS will
present its annual Holiday Show, HULA-HOOPIN'HANNAH & HER HANUKKAH
ADVENTURE, A Family Holiday Play by Janece Shaffer (author of Bluish), opens
Fri., November 23, 2007. Directed by
Barbara Cole Uterhardt, HULA-HOOPIN'HANNAH runs through December 9, 2007. It's
the first night of Hanukah, and Hannah's best friend Ramona has invited
Jessica, not Hannah, to spend the night, leaving Hannah with her grandmother
and "Martin the Martian," the world's nerdiest fourth grader. How will Hannah endure her tragic fate? First produced in 2003, this JTS commission
will delight audiences of all ages!
All Jewish Theatre of the South performances take place in
the Morris & Rae
Frank Theatre,
located at the MJCCA, 5342 Tilly
Mill Road, Dunwoody. All performances (with the
exception of HULA-HOOPIN' HANNAH) run Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights
at 8 pm; Sundays at 3 pm. Each Opening Night Saturday is preceded by three
reduced-price previews: Wednesdays at 8
