MJCCA's Weinstein School Offers Transitional Kindergarten
“Transitional Kindergarten is ideal for children who are ‘young’ five-year-olds, or children who, after completing Pre-K, may benefit from another year, to develop emotionally, socially and/or physically, before progressing to a public or private kindergarten program,” says Kim Sucan, director of The Weinstein School. “Parents have expressed a desire for a Transitional Kindergarten program, and we are very excited to meet their needs and add a fabulous new offering to our preschool.”
According to a recent study by the American Institutes for Research (AIR), students who attend Transitional Kindergarten, prior to kindergarten enrollment, are more advanced than their peers in language, reading, and math. In fact, the differences amount to as much as a five-month head start in kindergarten, based on AIR research findings.
The Weinstein School’s Transitional Kindergarten curriculum will feature literacy, math, science, and social studies exploration, as well as problem-solving and communications skills. Additional attributes include:
- Low teacher to student ratio (maximum of 10 children per class)
- Classes will be taught by certified teachers trained in differentiating instruction
- Hours are 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday
As an added convenience, the timing of the Transitional Kindergarten classes will enable students (for an additional cost) to go directly from TK class to Club J, the highly regarded, safe and meaningful after-school program, offered by the MJCCA, to Pre-K – 5th graders.
“Transitional Kindergarten has the ability to significantly advance children’s social and emotional development, as well as the potential to provide an academic head start as they enter Kindergarten,” Ms. Sucan adds.
