The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) Announces Auditions for a Unique New Theater Company: Spotlight: A Theatre Company for Adults with Special Needs

Auditions Will be Held on Tues. April 12, from 5:30-9:00 pm

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) has always been a place where people with special needs shine all year, through quality programming (including various sports; social events; trips; and the MJCCA’s award-winning Jerry’s Habima Theatre - produced by professionals and featuring actors with special needs, having recently completed its 23rd season.) Now, the MJCCA’s Blonder Family Department for Special Needs is proud to provide another opportunity for adults with special needs to shine, year-round, with the opening of its new theater company for adults with special needs called Spotlight. This free-of-charge program for adults 18+, is made possible through a generous gift from Helen Marie Stern, of blessed memory. Spotlight participants will meet once a week on Fridays at the MJCCA’s Dunwoody campus, from August 26, 2016-April 30, 2017. Auditions for the new Spotlight Theatre Company will be held on Tuesday, April 12 from 5:30-9:00 pm, in the MJCCA’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre (located at 5342 Tilly Mill Rd., Dunwoody). You must have an appointment to audition. Please call 678.812.4073 or email auditions@atlantajcc.org to schedule a time.

About Spotlight Theatre Company

Spotlight is an audition-based program for emerging artists with special needs. Participants in this new theater company will train together, take trips to local arts organizations, and participate in master classes with professionals in the field. With the support of seasoned educators and arts professionals, participants will have the opportunity to be a part of an enriching, hands-on theater experience. In addition, the company will rehearse and perform productions during their residency at the MJCCA.

Jared Powers, CEO of the MJCCA explains, “This new theater company is unique because participants will be trained in both the performing arts (plays, musicals, improv, storytelling, etc.), as well as behind the scenes production support (set design, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, box office, ushers, etc.).”

Jennifer Lieb, Director of Inclusion, MJCCA adds, “Through these hand-on theatrical experiences, participants will gain increased self-confidence, self-esteem, social skills, discipline, motivation — life skills that are useful long after the final curtain call.”

PLEASE NOTE: Those auditioning and performing must have one or more disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Men and women ages 18+ are encouraged to audition.
