The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta’s Blonder Family Department for Special Needs is proud to announce the second year of Spotlight Theatre Company, its year-round theater company for adults with special needs. This unique program for adults 18+, is made possible through a generous gift from Helen Marie Stern, of blessed memory. You must have an appointment to audition. Please call 678.812.4073 or email auditions@atlantajcc.org to schedule a time. The program is free and auditions are open to the community.

Auditions for the Spotlight Theatre Company will be held on Sunday, August 27 from 3:00-5:00 pm, in the MJCCA’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre (located at 5342 Tilly Mill Rd., Dunwoody). Spotlight participants will meet once a week on Fridays from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, at the MJCCA Zaban Park campus, from August 2017 through May 2018.

About Spotlight Theatre Company

Spotlight is an audition-based, year-round program for emerging artists with special needs. Participants in this theater company train together, take trips to local arts organizations, and participate in master classes with professionals in the field. With the support of seasoned educators and arts professionals, participants have the opportunity to be a part of an enriching, hands-on theater experience. In addition, the company rehearses and performs productions during its residency at the MJCCA.

“Instructors come in to give lessons on every aspect of theater and work on production pieces that can be shown to an audience,” explains Jennifer Lieb, Director of MJCCA’s Blonder Family Department for Special Needs. “Highlights from this past year include workshops with Shakespeare Tavern and Dads Garage, as well as the making of a short film with Dad's Garage.”

“What the participants loved about last year’s inaugural season was the training they received in both the performing arts (plays, musicals, improv, storytelling, etc.), and behind-the-scenes production support (set design, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, box office, ushers, etc.),” continued Lieb. “Through these theatrical experiences, participants gained increased self-confidence, pride, and motivation; all valuable life skills.”

PLEASE NOTE: Those auditioning and performing must have one or more disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Men and women ages 18+ are encouraged to audition.
