view options Stolen: The World’s Most Wanted Art. This class will present two of the greatest art heists in history: The Mona Lisa Goes Missing and Art Stolen by Stéphane Breitwieser and thrown in the Rhine River. On the morning of August, 21, 1911, the Louvre’s maintenance director discovered that the Mona Lisa was missing. In Paris, the leading magazine, Lillistration, wrote “What audacious criminal, what mystifier, what maniac collector, what insane lover, has committed this abduction?” You will find out by coming to this class. Stephan Breitweiser admitted to stealing 239 pieces of art from 172 museums while travelling around Europe and working as a waiter. It was valued and $1.4 billion. You will find out in this class how he did it and how much of the priceless art work ended up being thrown in the Rhine River.
