A Passover Haggadah: Go Forth and Learn
Rabbi Silber has given us two books in one: the Haggadah itself, in English and Hebrew, with his seder commentary and a collection of essays that provide close readings of the classic biblical and rabbinic texts that inform Seder-night ritual and narration. Both parts work beautifully together to illuminate the central themes of Passover: peoplehood, Covenant, our relationship to ritual, God’s presence in history, and other important issues that resonate with us all. Just as midrash attempts to bridge the gap between ancient text and contemporary meaning, Rabbi Silber’s Haggadah provides new sources of insight that deepen the Passover experience for today’s readers.

For Phish fans
The Geulah Papyrus: A Phish Haggadah
This haggadah contains the traditional script for the Passover Seder in both Hebrew and English, but it views the ritual from within the framework of a Jewish Phishhead’s wildest mid-show revelation. For a taste of the nerding out on Phish-inspired liturgy references within, the haggadah title is a reference to the Phish song “Guelah”. Geulah (geh-oo-lah) is the more accurate transliteration for the Hebrew word גְּאֻלָּה which means “salvation, redemption, freedom, release.” According to Phish.net, the song’s namesake, who is the mother of Dave’s Energy Guide Abrahams, spells her name “Geulah” (but pronounces it “Guelah”). And papyrus is the ancient form of paper used for writing in Egypt. Hence, the Geulah Papyrus, an expansive Phish-filled text about redemption from the narrowest of places, from Egypt.

The Santa Cruz Haggadah

This haggadah makes the psycho-spiritual lens its foundation, inviting us to look deep inside ourselves, as well as back in history and outside at the world. It asks: “How do I enslave myself? What are things I could practice doing differently during Passover that might lead to a real evolution of my heart and my relationship to myself, the others around me, my world and my history?” This multi-leveled focus engenders an interactive seder filled with deep and meaningful conversations.
The Leader’s Edition, the complete version of The Santa Cruz Haggadah, was the first haggadah to receive rabbinic support from prominent rabbis across the entire Judaic denominational landscape, from the Chassidic Bostonner Rebbe, Reb Levi Yitzchak Horowitz z”l, all the way to Reb Zalman Schachter Shalomi z”l, founder of the Jewish Renewal Movement, and rabbis from each of the denominations in between.
